VOSON Lab Overview & Researching Politically-oriented Conversations on Twitter
Date: 3rd July 2017
Speaker: Professor Robert Ackland
On 3rd July 2017, the Data Science Institute welcomed Associate Professor Robert Ackland from the Australian National University. Professor Ackland gave an excellent presentation entitled 'VOSON Lab Overview and Researching Politically-Oriented Conversations on Twitter'.
Professor Ackland provided the inter-disciplinary audience an overview of the Virtual Observatory for the Study of Online Networks (VOSON) Lab at the Australian National University. He discussed two tools that have come out of the lab: the VOSON software for hyperlink network construction and analysis, and the SocialMediaLab R package for collection of social media network and text data. Prof. Ackland followed this by outlining two research projects using large-scale data on politically-oriented conversations on Twitter. The first is an analysis of the extent and nature of incivility in tweets addressed to Australian federal politicians, using data collected over 2015 and 2016. The second is a study of social bots on Twitter and involves a dataset collected during the first televised debate of the 2016 US presidential election.
