The Data Science Institute invites you to their next Advanced Data Analytics Seminar taking place on 3rd July 2017. Assoc. Prof. Robert Ackland from the Australian National University will present 'VOSON Lab Overview and Researching Politically-Oriented Conversations on Twitter'.
In this presentation he will first provide an overview of the Virtual Observatory for the Study of Online Networks (VOSON) Lab (http://vosonlab.net) at the Australian National University, which was established in 2005 and is advancing the social science of the Internet via research, tool development, and the provision of research training. He will briefly discuss two tools that have come out of the lab: the VOSON software for hyperlink network construction and analysis, and the SocialMediaLab R package for collection of social media network and text data. Afterwards he will outline two research projects using large-scale data on politically-oriented conversations on Twitter. The first is an analysis of the extent and nature of incivility in tweets addressed to Australian federal politicians, using data collected over 2015 and 2016. The second is a study of social bots on Twitter and involves a dataset collected during the first televised debate of the 2016 US presidential election.
